Most platform programmes start with the airframe: range, payload, endurance. The ground segment — the operator console, the comms link, the launch and recovery process — tends to arrive later, sized to fit whatever the airframe decisions left behind.

That sequencing quietly caps what the platform can actually do in the field. An airframe with excellent endurance is only useful if an operator can sustain attention on it, hand it off cleanly between shifts, and recover it without a specialised crew and a long checklist.

Starting from the operator, not the airframe

Flipping the sequence — scoping the ground segment and the operator workflow before finalising the airframe — tends to produce simpler, more deployable systems. It forces early answers to the questions that usually surface too late: who is watching this, for how long, and what do they need in front of them to make a fast decision.

This is why our platform work starts with the ground station and the concept of operations, and treats the airframe as the component that has to satisfy those constraints — not the other way around.
